Domestic violence and pets

Some women feel that they are unable to leave a domestic violence situation because they are concerned for the wellbeing of their pets. In these cases, the woman may feel that their pet is at risk of being harmed if they leave to seek help or if they do not return home.

There are a number of programs set up around Australia that temporarily accommodate and care for pets while there is upheaval at home.

The Alice Springs Women’s Shelter may be able to provide support to women with pets who are fleeing domestic violence relationships, however this support is assessed and offered on an individual basis.
